West African Rhythms

The Intermediate West African Rhythms course (8:00pm) Prerequisites: Completion of Ben’s 10-week Beginning course or significant playing experience.

Course Description: The Beginning Springboard class (Thursdays at 6:30) puts more emphasis on technique, to make sure you will have the ability to create the sounds you want to hear and the ability to play what you reach for. Using traditional rhythms of Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire and Gambia, we explore the wide range of potential with both djembe and dunun. With this class, we will get an understanding on clarity of sound and technique (tone, slap, bass, how to hold your body and shape you hand, technique for dunun/bell stick holding and playing, exercises to build skills and stamina and rhythms to play and have fun with.)

With the Intermediate Skill Building Drum Music class (Thursdays at 8pm), we take the technique you already know (how to play clear tone, slap and bass, basic common accompaniments patterns, the ability to play the sound you are reaching for) and apply it to drum music. Ben will be teaching both traditional West African music, as well and his creative fusion of the traditional with American sensibilities (gotta put the funk in it).
